“If we affirm one single moment, we thus affirm not only ourselves but all existence. For nothing is self-sufficient, neither in us ourselves nor in things; and if our soul has trembled with happiness and sounded like a harp string just once, all eternity was needed to produce this one event—and in this single moment of affirmation all eternity was called good, redeemed, justified, and affirmed.”
I am a yes person. I have been told this so many times throughout my life. Yes is my response to most adventures, most new experiences, most people, flavors, and novelties. I actually just assumed this was normal. I have met a few no people. As a yes person no people generally have a lot to say to me. They say no to new ideas, no to risks, no to business ventures. No, no, no.
I think no may have been my first word but I’ve realized that yes is so much more fun. Yes is possibility; yes is openness; yes is learning; yes is opportunity; yes is boundless limitless fun.
Recently I was invited to perform with The Dance Your Soul dance troupe as a guest performer. This may not seem like a big deal however, I was sitting poolside when invited and the show was in 1.5 hours (normally it takes me 4-6 hours to prepare for one of my own shows!) “Yes,” I squealed, nearly jumping out of my lounge chair. Before I knew it I was rapidly preparing for the show. As I threw together my costume and curled my hair and debated what dance to perform- it occurred to me that I could debut a secret dance I had hiding up my corset for a special occasion. I choose to dance a new dance I composed as a surprise for my lover to his favorite song (video below).
When yes gets involved anything can change, everything is adaptable, and it is possible, in fact, to have it all. It’s possible to trust, to dance your sweet dance, and to move mountains to be where you want to be when you open yourself up to possibility.
In the face of a joyous yes everything is negotiated; everything can move, and the waters part to make room for your joy. The world is aching to serve the divine requests and desires within us. Equally, it is aching for us to open and receive.
What would it look like to say yes a few more times during your day? Its raining again…Yes?! Escargot as an appetizer…yes! New lover…yes! Another orgasm…yes! Summersaults off of what…yes?! That 3-letter word is an awakening force; it suggests openness and trusting things that are beyond the confines of predictability and control.
Being a yes person allows me more creativity, more fulfillment, and more novelty. It offers me a sense of aliveness… and sometimes comes with a bit of risk. “Yes,” beckons me to follow my heart and engage in the unknown.
This life is so short, (I know we have all heard that a million times) but really, it truly is; it’s fleeting. This three letter word could be the initiation into an array of opportunity. What if it opened you to new people, new experiences, and new understandings of you are? What if it opened you to what you desire on a deep level? What if it exposed you to something beyond the day-to-day, hour-to-hour instincts that carry you from one safe predictable experience to the next?
What if there is more?
Start small: yes can begin the second you open your groggy eyes. “Yes” can sneak out into the morning as you begin to stretch your sleepy limbs. You can whisper it then in the light of the new morning. “Yes.” It is that easy. With time your “yes” can grow, and your clan of yes-people can grow. You can shout “Yes!” from the tops of new mountains, you can shout it with friends, or you can shout it alone in the dark of the night under a swelling moon.
“Yes.”
I want more, more for me, more for you, and more for our world.
“Yes.”
All this and more is available. Yes it is.
Saying Yes To New Love from Conscious Burlesque on Vimeo.
This dance was composed by Madame Merci as a tribute to the grace, beauty, and preciousness of new love. Madame Merci’s partner was in the audience and had no idea she was going to perform this dance- this is on of his favorite songs. The dance is dedicated to saying yes to tender vulnerability and the pure bliss of new love.
Love,
Madame Merci
